At Ecotricity, we supply 100% renewable electricity and carbon neutralised gas to both homes and businesses. While the energy itself is the same, the differences go deeper than higher energy demand.
Business energy isn’t just “more of the same”; it’s a fundamentally different landscape, with distinct challenges, taxes, levies and far greater opportunities to shape our energy future. That is why it also has distinct tariffs, partnerships, customer service and products tailored to specific business needs.
At Ecotricity, we know that businesses have a specific need for demonstrating their green credentials, so we put a heavy focus on strong green energy origination and certification in the products for our business customers; this includes our Real Time REGOs solution and sleeved PPAs.
We supply a mix of microbusinesses, SMEs and I&C (industrial & commercial) customers. - whatever the energy demands of your business, we will be able to supply energy to your unique needs.
We use energy regulator Ofgem’s definitions for these categories, meaning a microbusiness has maximum annual energy consumption of 100,000 kWh; an SME has maximum annual energy consumption of 200,000 kWh; and an I&C business has annual energy consumption over 200,000 kWh.
Yes, we are the original green energy supplier. Our electricity is 100% green – made from the sun and the wind. We generate about 10% of it ourselves and the rest is certified green energy we buy from other green generators or via the wholesale market.
Recently, we built our very first green gasmill; we’re now refining the technology to create sustainable green gas made from grass that will feed into the National Gas Network. In addition, about 1% of the gas we supply to businesses comes from other green gasmills, and the rest is natural gas that is offset by investing in carbon reduction schemes around the world.
It’s hard to imagine using animals to generate energy, but it happens. For example, manure from factory farms is burned as biomass or used in anaerobic digestion vats to produce biomethane.
Animals are exploited to produce a small proportion of the UK’s energy, but it gets into the mix for a much larger proportion of homes. However, we don’t do that. That makes us the world’s first (and only) vegan-certified energy supplier, backed by Viva! and the Vegan Society.
We’re one of the UK’s leading business electricity suppliers offering 100% renewable power. From small business to large enterprises, we supply green business energy to British institutions of all sizes.
Our only limitation is that we will not work with organisations directly involved in: factory farming, animal slaughter, animal testing, arms, tobacco, nuclear power, fracking, GMOs or anything else we consider to be unethical, immoral or just plain wrong.

We are unique in many ways. But what makes us different to other energy companies is that, since we were founded in 1995 by Dale Vince OBE, we have been not-for-dividend, meaning we use excess profits from our bills to build new sources of green energy – as we like to call it, ‘bills into mills’.
This means that harnessing our 100% green electricity and carbon neutralised gas is one of the best ways in which any organisation can reduce their impact on the environment. The more businesses who join us, the more we can do towards our mission of eliminating fossil fuels and building Green Britain.
The Green Britain Group comprises of many sustainable businesses leading the way on showing how businesses can thrive from being sustainable – including us.
We were founded on the mission of decarbonising the three areas of life that make up 80% of the typical person's carbon footprint: energy, transport and food – while making room for nature. That means innovation and education are installed deep in our core values across the Group, whether it’s by creating new ways to produce renewable energy or by educating people on the impact of our world if we don’t act.
