We often talk about energy in broad strokes, like kilowatt-hours, emissions targets and green tariffs. But when it comes to how we power our homes versus how we power our businesses, the differences go deeper than higher energy demand. Business energy isn’t just “more of the same”; it’s a fundamentally different landscape, with distinct challenges and far greater opportunities to shape our energy future.

A key pillar for building Green Britain

At Ecotricity, we’ve long believed that energy is about more than electrons. It’s a tool for environmental change, a platform for showing Another Way and, ultimately, a lever we can pull to build a Green Britain. And nowhere is that lever longer than in the business world.

According to Cornwall Insights, the UK’s business market uses 160Twh of electricity every year, compared to 95 TWh used in the domestic market, meaning the choices businesses make about their supply have a major impact on the wider country’s energy supply.

That is why being with a truly deep green energy supplier is one of the best ways in which any organisation can reduce their impact on the environment. At Ecotricity, we have fitted that bill for three decades, as we use any excess profits from our bills to build new sources of green energy. That also means that every business that joins us is helping to build the windmills and sun parks that will power the green Britain of the future. We call this ‘Bills to Mills’.

Complex and tailored solutions

There is no doubt that we are seeing green innovation throughout the world of domestic energy. The boom in rooftop solar, for example, will continue to be a game changer – helping ensure more renewable energy is generated where it’s consumed, keeping demand off the grid and enabling local balancing via technologies like vehicle-to-grid, battery storage, and smart home systems.

However, businesses face a more complex energy equation than households – requiring even greater innovation. Businesses must consider operational demand, multi-site usage, load balancing, emissions reporting; and – increasingly – sustainability metrics that affect reputation, compliance, and investment.

Smart, transparent and built for the future

There is also the variation in factors like greater energy demand fluctuation, bespoke tariffs, different charges on bills and varying contract lengths for business energy customers. That complexity demands more than a tariff; it requires a strategic energy partner and innovator.

We also understand that no two businesses are the same. A heavy industries manufacturing facility, an independent shop and an arts or music venue all face vastly different energy profiles. That’s why business energy can’t be treated like domestic supply with a bigger bill. It needs bespoke thinking, tailored smart solutions, and a provider that sees your energy not as a utility, but as an asset.

That is why we work collaboratively with our business partners to co-create products and solutions to help them decarbonise. For example, Lush was one of the companies that helped us test our pioneering smart grids for business scheme. The business energy world demands that proactive approach much more than the domestic energy market – and it is an approach we are happy to take to help achieve Green Britain.

With business energy comes scale, and scale demands smarter energy use. From half-hourly metering and energy usage analytics to tailored load management and net zero strategy advice, the future of business energy is digital, data-informed, and deeply integrated into operations.

But too often, these tools are locked behind opaque contracts and jargon-heavy interfaces. We think it should be simpler and more collaborative.

The approach we take with Lush, where we work with our business customers as partners, not just account numbers, to bring them tailored solutions for their needs – whether that is Real Time REGOs (our time-matched REGO solution) or our Ecolibrium smart grid service – is consistent across the board.

Introducing Ecotricity Business

That’s why we now bring you Ecotricity Business, which is dedicated to supporting the unique needs of business energy users across the UK. It’s the same pioneering green ethos we’re known for, now with a sharper focus on the tools, services, and relationships that businesses need to thrive sustainably.

The green economy is thriving, as it’s now not just the sustainable choice but the economically sensible choice. Having a UK that is powered by renewables will insulate us from the volatility of fossil fuel prices and build long-term resilience into the economy.

The British business community is ready to embrace that green economy. So, whether you're looking to cut carbon, manage costs, or meet compliance goals, we have a real understanding of what you will need to do to achieve your energy goals – and are here to work with you to achieve that.

We’re not just supplying green energy. We’re building a movement, alongside the businesses shaping tomorrow’s economy. Resilient, reliable, regenerative – let's build Green Britain together.
