Nature is our theme for February, and our aim is to provide plenty of inspiration throughout the month for how you can make a positive impact to your surroundings. We’ve already shared our top tips on getting your garden ready for wildlife – if you haven’t done so already, check it out here.

We’ve also heard all about the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch, when Simon, our Head of Digital, took part again for the fifteenth year. He had a whole host of birds visit his garden and could happily identify a lot of them - he has had years of experience though!

So what happens if you’re less in the know, or when the bird you’ve spotted is perhaps a rare visitor to the UK?

Help is at hand with the RSPB’s interactive guide for identifying bird species. Check it out as it’s super useful when trying to work out whether you saw a greylag goose or a golden eagle! It lists four hundred and eight species of bird found in the UK, including some visiting from abroad. With simple options helping you narrow down your search, it won’t be long before you’re an expert.

And that’s not all…

You could make a real contribution to science and conservation by officially recording your findings. There’s a great free online resource by the Biological Records Centre called iRecord, where wildlife sightings are collated and checked by experts. The info you provide contributes to nature conservation, planning, research and education, so your involvement would be making a real difference.

In addition to having a website, they also have apps for iPhone and Android, so it’s easy to use on the move too.

With a massive variety of birds both close to home and further afield, there’s so much to see. How many can you spot?

We love working with the RSPB and supporting and supporting their mission to save nature. You can too by switching to us - we’ll donate up to £50 to the RSPB each year you’re with us.
