We’re always looking for ways to create a greener Britain, and now we’ve turned our attention to the communications market with our mobile phone service, Ecotalk.

Like everything else we do it’s powered by 100% green electricity - and it’s got a green outcome too. We use customers’ bill money to buy land to give back to nature. It’s not just about preserving wildlife habitats, it’s about creating new ones as we work towards ‘putting the bee back in Britain’.

We caught up with Rachel Preen, Head of Business Development & Commercial Partnerships, who shared her experience of this uniquely green mobile phone service.

Tell us a bit about what you do at Ecotricity

I build Partnerships with likeminded business and charities. It’s about creating relationships with organisations that share our values, so that together we can do more to make Britain greener.

Why do you choose to be with Ecotalk?

I need a mobile phone (who doesn’t!) and I like to be with a provider that has a moral compass and is making the world a better place.

    How’s the signal?

I use the phone as a ‘hotspot’ a lot, which means it needs to be reliable. I have little faith in the UK for mobile phone reception but with Ecotalk I can usually get 4G wherever I am.

How does Ecotalk compare to your previous mobile phone network?

Ecotalk is better than what I’d been used to. I’d been with Vodafone for years – and while they used to be okay, in more recent years their signal strength seems to have got worse, particularly in the house we bought a year ago... not ideal!

How do you feel about your bill money being used to buy land to give back to nature?

What isn’t there to like? This is kind of a no-brainer – with very little effort I am doing good! I’m investing in the future and not really doing anything different to what I was doing before.

What’s the best thing about being with Ecotalk?

The reception is great and I feel good knowing I’m making a difference, simply by paying my phone bill.

What’s your favourite native wildlife species?

Hedgehogs – I’m a big fan of bees too, but I want to give the hedgehogs a shout out, particularly as the weather gets colder and they might be needing a little help from us.

What’s your top tip for helping nature?

Compost everything you can and leave your garden to go a bit wild – it’s the perfect excuse for having an unkept garden!
