World Animal Day is an annual, global call to action for animal rights and welfare. The goal is to build a better future for animals by increasing awareness and improving education across the globe.
We’re proud to promote World Animal Day because it’s perfectly in tune with out ethical stance on the use of animals in energy production.
Many energy companies, including some ‘green’ ones, use animal by-products in their energy production. In fact, Ecotricity is the only energy company to be officially certified as vegan by both The Vegan Society and Viva!, the vegan charity.
Animal farming is a huge contributor to emissions – as well as being ethically wrong, using animals to make energy is contributing massively to the climate crisis.
When is World Animal Day?
World Animal Day is on 4 October every year, including 2025. It’s held on the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
The first World Animal Day was held in Germany in 1925 and run by Heinrich Zimmermann, publisher of the German magazine about dogs.
What happens on World Animal Day?
There are events all over the globe. If you fancy getting involved, the World Animal Day website has an interactive map showing where you can find events happening near you.
From educational workshops and shelter open days to fundraising concerts and nature walks, there are countless ways to participate. Check the map to see what's happening in your area and connect with other animal lovers.
You can make an even bigger impact by planning your own event. The website has toolkits and resources to help you get started, and you can add your event to the map to help raise awareness.
Help people take action around the world
If you’re passionate about making a difference on World Animal Day, you can even apply to become an official ambassador.
Ambassadors help raise awareness and encourage people to participate. Many of these ambassadors hold key roles in animal welfare organizations in their respective countries. They can also apply for funding for projects by registered, not for profit animal welfare organisation, with grants sponsored by Naturewatch Foundation.
Recent grants beneficiaries include Ocean Acres Animal Sanctuary for animal rescue expenses and a community education project in Barbados, and Jakarta Animal Aid Network in Indonesia, who converted a van into a mobile veterinary clinic that provides veterinary services in Bali, Java and Sumatra.
Want to do your bit for the planet in other ways?
