Imagine being able to lower your energy bills and earn money from your solar panels or home battery, just by using electricity at the right time. Sounds like the future? It’s happening now!
We’re teaming up with energy innovators, Amber, and digital billing experts, Gentrack, to bring dynamic energy pricing to UK households. This new approach lets customers take control of their energy use like never before, shifting when they use electricity to take advantage of lower prices and selling power back to the grid when prices spike.
In short, your home can now be a smart, responsive part of the energy grid.
What is dynamic pricing?
Dynamic pricing means that the price of electricity changes throughout the day, reflecting real-time conditions on the grid. With the right tech setup, like solar panels, a home battery or an electric vehicle, you can use electricity when it’s cheap and sell back excess energy when prices (and demand) are high.
This isn’t just about saving money. It’s about being part of a smarter, greener energy future. By adjusting your energy use based on supply and demand, you can help to stabilise the grid and support the transition to 100% renewable energy.
How it works
Our dynamic pricing offering combines cutting-edge smart home energy tech from Amber with Gentrack’s next-generation billing platform. This powerful combination gives you real-time control over your energy decisions, including:
When to use energy from the grid
When to store solar power in a battery
When to sell energy back to the grid for the best price
It’s the most sophisticated approach to energy pricing currently available in the UK, offering half-hourly updates that reflect wholesale energy prices for both import and export.
A step forward for the UK’s green energy goals
“This is the next stage of evolution for the energy market – smart, flexible, and low carbon,” said Dale Vince, founder of Ecotricity. “We’re empowering our customers to turn their homes into extensions of the energy grid. That means households will have visibility and control over when to buy, store, or sell electricity – using technology that was previously out of reach to most.”
The move follows Gentrack’s recent investment in Amber and signals a broader shift towards digital-first energy platforms that help meet the UK’s net zero targets.
Mike Carruthers, General Manager EMEA at Gentrack explained “This partnership marks a key step in enabling smarter, data-driven choices for consumers. We’re helping households and businesses take control of their energy use and their carbon footprint.”
Dynamic pricing is coming in 2025
