Launched Monday 24 November, Dale Vince OBE, has created a new interventionist multi-media platform, Bablefish – an eight-page budget special dedicated to energy reform, which will reach every MP, MSP, Welsh Assembly Member and Peer.
Ahead of the upcoming budget, Dale urges all Parliamentarians to back urgent reform of Britian’s energy market with three simple measures to bring down bills and strengthen the economy.
Dale comments, “This paper is dedicated to the reform of our energy market. It sets out three simple measures that could halve energy bills, cut inflation and interest rates, and lift over a million people out of poverty.
“An enormous boost to our economy is within reach. It’s not about Net Zero — it’s about fixing a rip-off system that punishes households and weakens Britain’s economy. I’ve sent this to every MP and Peer in the land — because the prize is huge, and the fix is simple. Britain’s energy rules make our bills artificially high. It doesn’t have to be that way. Will you join me in calling for change?”
What are the three measures?
1. Break the link
It’s simple – we can end the pointless rule that ties the price of green electricity to the global price of gas. This isn’t a new concept – Dale has published several reports into the economic impact of this link.
It makes financial sense – this single change could have saved £43.5 billion over the last five years. That’s nearly £9 billion year!
This would protect Britain from future energy crises and stop households paying fossil fuel prices for homegrown wind and sun.
2. Protect the North Sea
We can adopt a proven green energy mechanism to fix prices, protect jobs and investment as the North Sea fossil industry completes its decline (which started in 1999).
We support green energy projects with a fixed price (which is known as a CfD) - which ultimately lowers the cost of green energy. We could do the same with the fossil fuel projects in the North Sea and put fossil fuels on a level playing field with green energy.
Over the last five years, this could have cut bills by almost £10 billion a year or £48.5 billion in total.
Once again, these aren’t small numbers!
3. Control the networks
It’s time to reform Britain’s mostly foreign-owned energy networks – regulated monopolies that deliver power and gas.
We don’t think about how electricity and gas enter our homes – but we should.
These companies make 40% profit margins while underinvesting and hiking prices. Proper regulation could save 5 billion a year – 25 billion in total over five years. There are profit caps for energy retailers, so why can’t there be the same for these monopoly network operators?
We’ll leave Dale with the final word -
“We can fix the system, cut bills, boost growth and strengthen Britain’s economy — all in one go. Unless Labour brings down energy bills before the next election it risks handing the country into the grasp of the hard-right Reform party.”
What can I do?
Education is key – read up on these issues, as always knowledge is power. Take a look at the first-edition of Bablefish here and be reassured that it isn’t going anywhere. This is just the beginning – tacking the “truth about power”. It’s a new voice in your ear, making sense of the nonsense. Keep an ear out.
