The amazing WOMAD festival returns this year to Charlton Park in Malmesbury (26 - 29 July). It’s one of the most mind-blowing festivals you’ll ever go to – nowhere else will you see musicians from Belgium to Brazil and a host of countries in between. It really is like travelling around the world in music.
Like a true festival of old, it’s not just music either – there are poetry shacks, wellbeing sanctuaries, worlds of art, food and children’s entertainment. That’s why we love WOMAD so much, and it’s why we’re supporting them for the sixth year running. We even have our own stage – ‘Ecotricity in the Arboretum’.
Here are five things we love about WOMAD (there are lots more, but we’ll let you find those out for yourself!):
Food! Healthy, sustainable, delicious food from around the world. Lots of choice for vegans too – so it’s easy to party meat-free.
Human Books! Yes, human books. You can ‘check out’ a person for half an hour – your human book will have an interesting, inspiring or extraordinary real-life story to tell in a beautifully relaxing yurt. And you have 45 ‘books’ to choose from.
It’s a festival with a conscience. The WOMAD team work hard to have minimal impact on the environment - there are water fountains around the festival so you can refill and re-use instead of buying plastic, there are recycling points everywhere, and if you’re camping, you’ll even be given recycling sacks when you arrive.
It’s super family friendly. Not only do children (13 and under) go free to the festival, there’s a dedicated ‘World of Children’. Open from 9am to 7pm each day, it’s a huge area where children can explore, create, learn and play with hundreds of free activities.
And of course, we can’t say it enough, the music is utterly brilliant! It’s not every day you get to hear Damon Albarn’s favourite African band next to the Parisian Bjork!
