Credit checks

Like most energy companies, when you join Ecotricity we’ll run a credit check to make sure you’re able to keep up regular payments.

What kind of check do we make?

When you apply to switch to Ecotricity, we run a credit check with Equifax. This will be recorded on your credit history, so other organisations who look up your credit score in the future will see that a utility company has checked it.

Is there any reason to worry about a credit check?

Credit checks from energy companies and other utilities happen all the time, whenever people switch suppliers. It’s expected, so it shouldn’t normally affect your credit score in any significant way.

However, if your credit history shows that you’ve changed energy suppliers often over a short amount of time, this could be considered unusual behaviour by some organisations.

What happens if my credit score is low?

We’ll need to request some more information from you before you join us.
