The Giga Poll is a ground-breaking poll of over 45,000 people on more than 80 social, political and economic issues to learn what Britain really thinks, commissioned by Ecotricity and Hope not Hate.

Ever since Ecotricity launched in 1995, we’ve been committed to the highest ethical standards, from vegan energy and solar sites that encourage biodiversity to fair pricing that enables us to do our work in building more sources of green energy.

It also means that we need to understand what the people of Britain think about the key issues of our time, in green energy and beyond.

The Giga Poll questioned people on what they really think about the big issues – green energy, climate change, the cost of living, immigration and other hot button topics that feature regularly in the press.

Dale Vince said: “I wanted to know what Britain really thinks. That’s why I commissioned this Giga Poll. Our findings show we’re being told fairy tales by the right about the country we live in, about our fellow citizens, our neighbours and friends and what they care about.

“I hope the views and attitudes, expressed through this massive poll - will help shape the future of our country. It needs to start with government, they have the levers of power - and they need to start by listening.”

What are the results of the Giga Poll on green issues?

The Giga Poll shows that people in Britain understand the scale and imminence of the climate crisis:

  • 61% agree climate change poses a threat to the future well-being of themselves and their family – only 13% disagree.

  • 66% believe climate change is caused by human activity, with just 10% of people denying the link.

  • 53% say the weather and climate change will get worse over the next five years – only 15% believe things will get better.

Given these statistics, it’s no surprise that a majority of Britons back action on climate change.

Over half of people (51%) support the move to Net Zero by 2050, but the government must win the economic argument, with nearly as many believing the cost is too high.

Part of this concern over cost is down to where the money will come from – an overwhelming majority (75%) want big business to pay more for environmental damage and emissions, with only 6% disagreeing.

What are the other results of the Giga Poll?

The Giga Poll is a wide-ranging survey that reveals a country that’s far more tolerant and inclusive than the news and social media may lead you to believe. Some of the most important findings include:

  • Cost of living is by far the biggest concern (56%), followed by the NHS (38%)—while immigration and asylum ranks only fourth (25%), despite being presented as the main issue by the far right.

  • 65% of people say they live in peaceful, friendly communities—not ones torn apart by race or culture. Just 11% disagree.

  • 79% enjoy mixing with people of other ethnicities, religions and backgrounds—painting a picture of a multicultural Britain that works.

  • 75% believe the rich are getting richer while the poor fall further behind and 39% support a wealth tax.

How the green transition can bring down the cost of living

In our Breaking the Link article from May 2025, Dale Vince explains why energy prices are still so high.

By breaking the link that ties the price of cheap, homegrown green energy to sky-high international gas prices, the average household would have saved nearly £400 on energy bills in 2023.

It’s a simple, one-off change that would make everyone in the country better off.

Who conducted the Giga Poll?

The Giga Poll was conducted by HOPE not hate and backed by the TUC.

Nick Lowles, Chief Executive of HOPE not hate said: “The Giga Poll is the most important piece of polling that has been conducted for many years. The size of the poll gives us invaluable information about the state of Britain today and of the hopes and concerns of its citizens.

“The timing of the poll is also crucial. Against the backdrop of growing anti-immigrant rhetoric and the largest far right demonstration in British history, this poll clearly shows that the bulk of British people are far more positive about the country than the media discourse states and are more progressive and nuanced on issues such as climate action and immigration.

“The British people are worried about the state of the country, fearful that things could get worse, but want them to get better and demand that the Government do more to protect them and their futures.

“While most polls give us a snapshot into where people are, this poll also gives us a route map to address many of the issues that we as a country face. This, in itself, makes the Giga Poll a vitally important piece of research.”

Paul Nowak, TUC General Secretary, “We need an economy that works for working people. But right now, millions are stuck in insecure jobs, struggling to make ends meet and build a better future.

"Strengthening employment rights isn’t just the right thing to do - it’s hugely popular with the British public.

"Making work pay is the kind of real, tangible change people are crying out for.

“Labour is at its best when it’s ambitious for working people. That means levelling up rights at work. It means fairer taxes on wealth to fund the services we all rely on. And it means investing in good, secure work in every corner of the country so no one is left behind.
