We’re delighted to announce that broadcaster and environmentalist Chris Packham has taken on a new role as Chief Ecologist at Ecotalk.
Ecotalk is our unique mobile phone service, launched in 2016, that uses its profits to give land back to nature.
Chris will help accelerate the restoration of Britain’s natural landscapes through ambitious rewilding projects that are already underway in East Sussex and Devon.
He said “We are in a crisis , wildlife is disappearing before our eyes, measured, quantified, analysed… beyond question. But it simply doesn’t have to be like this.
“We have the skills, technologies and energies to restore, repair and re-introduce nature into the UK. And it’s easy to think ‘Well, maybe, but what can I do?’… the answer is simple, you can talk and text on your phone, you can turn chatter into actual conservation!
“I’m very excited to be joining Ecotalk to help drive these projects forward and make a difference for wildlife. And throughout we will be communicating our successes and challenges, sharing with you the species that prosper and offering ideas for you to implement at home.
“Together we can drive a positive change for the things that need us now, the wild things, the things we love most. C’mon, let’s Ecotalk a better future for nature!”
Ecotalk’s rewilding efforts are already making a huge difference on two flagship sites:
Bowyers Wood – West Sussex (nearly 300 acres)
A neglected but diverse woodland of oak, beech, hazel, chestnut and ash. Plans include thinning, pond restoration, meadow creation, and the reintroduction of beavers. Nest boxes and ecological monitoring will begin this winter.
Downicary – Devon
Once a grazed pasture, this site is being transformed into a wetland haven. New ponds, bogs and scrapes are restoring habitats, while native hedgerows will be planted this winter. Wild beavers already occupy a nearby stream, and otters are expected to be confirmed soon via camera traps.
Our founder, Dale Vince, said “Chris brings unrivalled passion and knowledge, he’s exactly who we need to lead this work – it’s the perfect match.
“Ecotalk is the most sustainable phone service out there. Every time you use your phone you’ll be doing some good for nature, helping to restore Britain’s natural landscapes and species. Our partnership with Chris marks the start of a powerful new chapter in Ecotalk’s mission to reverse the loss of biodiversity in Britain - by giving land back to nature.”
