Ecotricity, the world’s first green energy company, now proudly supplies electricity to many of the UK’s best known and most popular visitor attractions in a year-long supply deal with Merlin Entertainments UK.

Ecotricity will power all of Merlin’s attractions with 100% renewable energy from the wind and the sun, including its flagship resort theme parks, Alton Towers, Chessington World of Adventure and Thorpe Park, alongside LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort, The Coca-Cola London Eye, Madame Tussauds and SEA LIFE Centres.

Alongside green electricity supply to Merlin’s UK estate – Ecotricity’s planning team are also supporting Merlin’s sustainability and procurement specialists as they investigate building their own green energy generation and storage assets at a number of its locations.

Ecotricity is also exploring with Merlin further opportunities to promote green energy and raise awareness of the benefits of pursuing sustainable lifestyles.

Dale Vince, founder of Ecotricity, said: “We’re proud to be working with Merlin Entertainments in the UK. It’s a critical time for businesses to make a switch to renewable power. The UN says we have just 12 years to save the planet to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Energy from fossil fuels are the biggest cause of climate change, so green energy is the simple answer and a fantastic place to start on the journey towards sustainability.

“As owner and operator of many of the country’s biggest attractions, we’re excited about the possibility of working together with Merlin to raise awareness of a Greener Britain.”

Merlin’s group procurement director, John Butcher, said: “Going green needn’t cost the earth. Working with Ecotricity we are showing we can save money and reduce our impact on the planet by buying our electricity from renewable sources.

“This is a significant step forward in making our business more sustainable, while we look further forward and assess the viability of increasing the amount of power we generate ourselves, helping reduce our carbon footprint and energy costs further.”

Climate Clock

The Climate Clock is a version of the Doomsday clock that has been running since 1947 - this tracks the risk of global man-made disaster, through man made technology (like nuclear weapons) - displaying the minutes and seconds left before midnight, when disaster strikes. The climate crisis is a small part of the calculations made.
The climate clock uses a similar approach, but, focuses only on the climate crisis - which is the biggest and most urgent existential threat we face.
"The Climate Clock is a countdown to the biggest man-made disaster we face - but also a measure by which we can track our progress - moving from fossil to renewable energy. It shows we have no time to lose - the clock is ticking…" Dale Vince, OBE.
