Ecotricity march with Greta
On Friday 28 February, we took to the streets of Bristol with over 30,000 protestors with climate change activist and Time Person of the Year, Greta Thunberg for a climate strike demanding action on the worsening climate crisis.
Organised by the Bristol Youth Strike 4 Climate the march led by Nobel Peace prize nominee, Greta, drew fans and supporters from all over the country and inspired followers from all different ages and walks of life as she spoke.
Greeted to chants of her name, Greta addressed the crowds criticising governments and the media;
“It should not be this way, we should not be the ones who will have to lead on this and tell the uncomfortable truth.
Once again they sweep their mess under the rug for us – young people, their children – to clean up for them.
We must continue and we have to be patient and remember that the changes required will not happen overnight.
But if enough people are pushing for the change, then change will come. And we are those people. And every single person counts!”
Addressing the large crowds gathered at College Green before the march began, Greta urged people to become “the adults in the room” as “world leaders are behaving like children” going as far as stating that “We are being betrayed by the people in power and they are failing us but we will not back down.”
The 17 year old Swedish campaigner then proclaimed;
“Activism works. So I'm telling you to act.”
Crowds of supporters and fellow activists joined Greta on the march through central Bristol. Greta led the march, flanked on either side by fellow young activists behind a green banner reading ‘Skolstrejk for Klimatet’, Swedish for ‘School Strike for Climate’.
Many people, especially the school children, spoke of the inspiration Greta had given them to make positive changes in their own lives to reduce their impact on the planet and stand up for what they believed in.
Greta ended her speech by encouraging the thousands of men, women and children in attendance not to give up in the fight against climate change offering a warning to politicians and governments declaring;
“We will not be silenced because we are the change, and change is coming whether you like it or not. Thank you and let's march.”
Greta – we hear you, we support you and we’ll continue to march beside you. We must act – and act now!
