What is green electricity?
Green electricity is power generated from natural, renewable sources that replenish themselves continuously. This is unlike fossil fuels, which take millions of years to form. Sources include wind, solar and hydropower, all of which produce little to no carbon emissions during generation.
When you switch to a green electricity tariff, your supplier matches the energy you use with power from renewable sources fed into the National Grid. This process is verified through Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) certificates that confirm the electricity's green credentials.
Green electricity from wind and solar power
Throughout our 30-year history, we have reinvested the excess profits from our customer bills into new green projects, including wind and solar parks across the UK.
Our 24 wind parks across Britain are home to 74 beautiful windmills. The environmental benefit of our windmills is huge, saving over 18,000 tonnes of CO2 each year in the fight against the climate crisis.
All our windmills create electricity in the same way, even in a gentle breeze. The wind turns the blades, which are connected to a spinning shaft in the body of the windmill. A generator converts this motion into electricity, which is passed through a transformer to bring the voltage up so it can be sent to the National Grid.
Meanwhile, our first sun park was 1MW in size, with over 5,000 solar panels joined together. We’ve since built two new sun parks using the latest panel technology, with a combined capacity of 16.5 MW.
These two solar parks are next door to two of our existing wind parks in Leicestershire and Devon, sharing the same connection to the grid, which is a really efficient way of doing things.
Whatever the weather, solar energy is generated when photons from the sun create a flow of electricity in the solar panel, which is why you’ll sometimes see them referred to as photovoltaic panels.
ESG goals through green electricity
Electricity procurement is a critical pillar of modern business best practice, with a recent Bain & Company survey of more than 750 global B2B buyers finding that half prioritise suppliers with stronger sustainability credentials. Furthermore, the economic case for renewable business energy is becoming increasingly clear.
Recent research from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) shows that unchecked global warming could hit the UK economy harder than expected. A rise in global temperatures of almost 3°C could reduce GDP by 8% and increase government borrowing by 2% of GDP. Green electricity backed by renewable generation
Having spent three decades building new green infrastructure across Britain, we are able to use these wind and solar parks to generate about 10% of our green energy. The rest is certified green energy we buy from other green generators or via the wholesale market.
Each year, every UK energy company has to publish where its electricity supply comes from. In the latest figures covering April 2024 to March 2025, our fuel mix was as follows:
Onshore wind: 35.35%
Offshore wind: 31.96%
Hydropower: 25.81%
Solar: 6.67%
Biogeneration: 0.21%
So that's 100% renewable electricity, with 0 g of CO₂ emissions per kWh. In contrast, the UK average fuel mix was only 42.1% for that same period, with 154g of CO2 emissions per kWh.
Building new renewable electricity

We've been not-for-dividend since day one, meaning we use any excess profits from our bills to build new green infrastructure and for renewable energy investment.
A number of other energy companies claim green credentials for themselves or for some of their tariffs, but are their claims genuine? There are three levels of activity that energy companies engage in, from the superficial to the impactful.
Trading green certificates: Some companies trade green REGOs. However, REGOs can be detached from the green energy itself and sold separately. This becomes a problem if trading green certificates is all the supplier does.
Trading green energy: Other companies buy green energy along with REGO certificates from generators and supply it to their customers. This is better. However, as with trading certificates, the energy is typically from a source that’s already been built. It exists and is part of the national supply. When one company buys it, another one loses it; it’s merely a transfer of existing green energy.
Building new sources of green energy: This is the only activity that moves the dial. Britain currently generates around 40% of its electricity from renewable sources, but we need to get to 100% and we can only do that by building more. Trading certificates won’t get us there.
