Smart meter roll out

As part of government plans to bring our energy system up to date, around 53 million Smart meters will be fitted in over 26 million homes in Britain by the end of 2020.

Smart meter roll-out for all Ecotricity customers

We will be rolling out Smart meters to all Ecotricity customers starting in 2016. We’ll be installing Smart meters region by region and we will contact you when engineers are in your area.

We’ll give you a survey once the installation is complete, so you can give us feedback on how you feel it all went. 

It will be about 8-12 weeks from the date of your installation before you get your first bill. If you're on Ecotricity Pay As You Go and you have an old prepayment meter, your credit or debit will be transferred by us within 48 hours of your installation (though we advise you run down your credit as much as possible in the lead up to your installation). 

At the moment not all homes can have a Smart meter – for instance, people living in high-rise flats where the meter is in the basement. However, we’re investigating new kinds of Smart meter and we hope almost every home will have one in the near future.

Already have a Smart meter?

If you already have a Smart meter it’s possible that you may lose the 'smart' functionality when you first switch to us. Don’t worry, it’ll still work the same as a conventional meter.

Sometimes your meter may not be able to talk to us. It could be blocked or have a weak signal. If this happens we'll ask you for a meter read to ensure your bill is accurate. Also, if you have a Smart meter that was fitted by another supplier, we may not be able to get reads from it. Again, if this happens we may send our meter readers out to you.
