What is smart?
Smart meters replace your current meters and because they are smart they ‘talk’ to our team at Ecotricity, so you won’t have to give us meter readings.
Smart meters give us the latest figures on your energy use, which means your bills will be more accurate.
More importantly, the meters ‘talk’ to you, too – telling you how much energy you’re using and when. This means that you can spot patterns in how you use energy, where you are using more than you need, so you can find ways to save energy.
You can find out more about the smart meter roll out here.
What's so good about smart meters?
1. Use less, pay less
Your smart meter will show you how much energy you're using in real time and how much it’s costing you. You can even compare it with what you’ve used over the last day, month or year.
2. Smart from your sofa
Your smart meter lets you view your energy use on the handy In-Home Display (IHD).
3. No more regular meter readings
Your meter tells us exactly how much energy you’re using. That means there’s less need for you to submit meter readings, and you’ll get fewer visits from our meter readers.
4. Accurate statements
We’ll know how much energy you’re using, so there’ll be no need for any more estimated bills, meaning you’ll only have to pay for what you use.
5. Easy pre-payment
Ecotricity PAYG smart meters make it easier to pay for your energy. When you make your payment, your smart meter will top up automatically – you won’t need to put a card in the meter.
Your In-Home Display
An In-Home Display (also known as an IHD) is a small device with a screen that will show you how much electricity and gas you are using at any time. It will also give you some information about how you have used electricity and gas in the past. This information may be given in pounds and pence (as well as kilowatt hours) and could help you understand how your home is using energy at a given point, information you use to help you save money on your energy bills.
Remember, your IHD is a good way to keep an eye on your daily, weekly or monthly energy use. It gives the figures in terms of pounds, kilowatt hours and your carbon emissions. (The amount of CO2 emissions that Ecotricity produces while generating electricity is zero, so your IHD will display zero for your electricity. We show this in our fuel mix disclosure.)
To get the most of your smart meter, refer to the smart meter and IHD guide or download a copy of the guide.
Your smart meter is capable of sending us data on a daily basis. Receiving your data this frequently means that we can give you more accurate bills and we can show you more detail, more often – and this can be better for you. If you'd like to change your meter readings to monthly, please contact us at 0345 812 5555.
You no longer need to send us your meter readings, as we already have the information. However, if you want to take readings for yourself, to check on how much energy you’re using, our smart meter and IHD guide explains how to do this. You can download the guide you need here.
The Data Guide for Smart Meters (PDF) outlines the key information customers need to know about their rights and choices when they get a smart meter installed.
