Viva!

The most powerful action you can take to end animal suffering, help protect the environment and improve your health, is to go vegan.

Viva! is the UK’s largest vegan campaigning charity, recently celebrating its 25th anniversary of activism! Pioneering the vegan revolution since its founding by Juliet Gellatley, in 1994.

Expose and inspire

Viva! aim to expose the widely accepted systematic abuse of animals, its effects on the planet and to inspire the healthy alternative planet-based existence! In the UK 1 billion animals, 4.5 billion fish and 2.6 billion shellfish are slaughtered every year.

The demand for cheap products often leads to soulless industrial farming where animals are stripped of all dignity and shown zero compassion. Sadly, legislation is not enough to ensure the quality of life these animals have regardless of the type of farm they come from.

Viva!’s investigative research, has exposed the reality of this to countless numbers of people across the world.

Our attitude as a nation towards consumption is as outdated as the denial of the existence of global warming itself! The devastating effects of CO2 on our environment have been widely acknowledged for some time. However, the detrimental effects of the human appetite for meat and animal products still seems to get ignored.

Deforestation, ecological collapse, species loss, climate change, erosion, freshwater scarcity, and pollution; are just some of the harmful by-products of our eating habits.

Food production accounts for over a quarter of all global carbon emissions, and almost 60% of that carbon is a result of animal products. So even if you don’t follow a vegan diet, switching to vegan energy, could be one of the biggest single things you can do to cut your carbon footprint, protect the environment and combat the unethical treatment of animals.

Which is why we have partnered with the vegan charity, Viva!

Guaranteed green, guaranteed vegan

Our partnership means Viva! can offer their supporters the same 100% green and guaranteed vegan energy supply that they use themselves!

The difference between green energy and vegan energy is that green energy is the production of electricity or gas through renewable sources such as solar, wind, wave and tidal, in place of traditional fossil fuels, whereas vegan energy is the production of electricity or gas that doesn’t involve the use of animals or animal by-products. Read more about how we make our green electricity.

So just because an energy supply is green, doesn’t make it vegan

We believe you've got a right to know how your energy is made and the impact it has on animals and the environment, so you can choose a supplier that fits with your principles.

"Viva! has been campaigning for a vegan world since 1994 and have been a catalyst for change in the public, industry and government’s approach to veganism. Our supporters appreciate that they can purchase energy from a supplier that is 100% renewable and guarantees that no energy is sourced from farmed animal waste.”

“It is essential for us to work collaboratively to advocate a sustainable and ethical lifestyle. We have the upmost respect for Ecotricity’s work and are proud to work closely with them.”

Juliet Gellatley, founder and director, Viva!

Climate Clock

The Climate Clock is a version of the Doomsday clock that has been running since 1947 - this tracks the risk of global man-made disaster, through man made technology (like nuclear weapons) - displaying the minutes and seconds left before midnight, when disaster strikes. The climate crisis is a small part of the calculations made.
The climate clock uses a similar approach, but, focuses only on the climate crisis - which is the biggest and most urgent existential threat we face.
"The Climate Clock is a countdown to the biggest man-made disaster we face - but also a measure by which we can track our progress - moving from fossil to renewable energy. It shows we have no time to lose - the clock is ticking…" Dale Vince, OBE.
