Ecotricity History - 2005

Green Park

Our 10 year anniversary and we celebrated in style, with Britain’s most visible windmill, on the Prudential’s Green Park - right on junction 11 of the M4.

We reckoned that nine out of ten people had never seen a windmill before – and therefore found it difficult to separate fact from fiction when faced with the growing amount of anti-wind scaremongering – and we thought what better way to challenge that than show people for themselves what modern windmills are really like. So we built this one by the M4. And it went down a storm.

Reading Council even began to talk to Greenpeace about how the borough could go 100% wind powered... This was our third Merchant Wind Power project, and the first to power offices, rather than a factory. Surprisingly, perhaps, this was also the first windmill in the whole of the South East of England.

In other news – the number of people we supplied Green Electricity to grew to over 13,000 by the end of the year.

Total windmills installed: 17
MW installed (this year): 2
Total capacity to date: 15
Homes powered (equiv): 8,296
Tonnes of CO2 saved p.a.: 13,451
Homes supplied year end: 13,496
