Somerton Wind Turbine
The Somerton wind turbine is one of a new generation of direct drive, variable speed wind turbines, brought to the UK by Ecotricity.
It was installed at West Somerton, Norfolk, in July 2000 and provides 5% of Great Yarmouth's domestic electricity requirements - that's a staggering 4,500,000 units of pollution-free, ‘green’ electricity each year.
The turbine provides electricity for over 1,300 local homes in Somerton, Great Yarmouth. It took 12 trucks to transport the tower sections, machine house, hub and 33m long blades. The 67m tall turbine took 4 days to construct. This was Ecotricity's second Norfolk wind project, the first being the Swaffham turbine at the Ecotech Centre.
