Sainsbury's, East Kilbride
The East Kilbride wind turbine is the first of Ecotricity's unique Merchant Wind Power (MWP) initiatives.
Built without subsidy and supplied without a premium, MWP is a pioneering new concept whereby customers buy the electricity generated from their own 'on' or 'off-site' wind turbine which is built, owned and operated by Ecotricity. Merchant Wind Power provides an economic and commercially viable source of renewable power for organisations with an environmental agenda.
The turbine was installed at Sainsbury's Distribution Centre in March 2001 and provides at least one third of the electricity required by the cold storage depot, which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The project was officially launched by Energy Minister Brian Wilson and Rhona Brankin MSP, pictured left.
