East Lindsey District Council voted 12 to 5 to accept Ecotricity’s planning application to add a further six wind turbines to the Bambers’ Farm Wind Park in Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire. The decision, made by the 17 members of the Council’s Development Control Committee on 8th September 2005, marks a continued commitment by the local authority to support clean energy from wind power.
The project has been developed by Ecotricity, the UK’s leading renewable energy company, and will feature six new turbines, each standing 65-metres high. The new extension will generate an extra 14 million units (kWh) of green electricity every year.
Dale Vince, founder of Ecotricity, said: "I’m really pleased about this decision. It’s an endorsement of wind energy and reflects the good work we’ve being doing in the region. We’ve had great support from local people, which goes to show that wind energy can be a good neighbour. I’d also applaud the Council’s decision. It’s a positive step, and vital in the fight against climate change and securing our environment for future generations. But it’s not just about that. Local homes can buy their power right now from ecotricity at the same price as conventional brown supply – and that’s unique.”
The Bambers’ Farm extension will go ahead during the summer of 2006 and will result in a total of 16 turbines on site. With a total capacity of almost 11MW the extended wind farm will provide nearly 10,000 homes with renewable energy – over 18% of homes in the area – making a significant contribution to Lincolnshire ’s target to provide 10% of its power from renewable energy sources by 2010.
• Ecotricity founded the green energy movement in 1995, and has grown to become Europe ’s leading independent electricity company.
• Ecotricity believes that only by continuously building new sources of green energy can we make a real impact on the root causes of climate change in the UK . By changing where our electricity comes from, carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels can be dramatically reduced.
• Ecotricity founder, Dale Vince, is a well known environmental campaigner and commentator. In 2004 he was awarded the OBE for services to the environment and sits on the Government’s Renewables Advisory Board.
