The greatest contributor to climate change is carbon dioxide emissions - the main culprit being conventional electricity which accounts for 30% of carbon dioxide emissions in this country. The best and easiest thing we can do to help the environment is a simple switch to clean energy to power our homes.
This month, a major breakthrough in electricity supply is being launched by world leading green electricity company, Ecotricity. For the first time, a real green electricity tariff is available to the public which actually delivers new green power sources. Ecotricity aims to convert at least one million householders to its new home supply service - that's a saving of 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year!
Switching to Ecotricity is easy - electricity is delivered to your home in the same way as before - and it shouldn't cost any more than normal electricity, because Ecotricity is the same price as polluting electricity from the local supplier in each region.
Ecotricity is the only licensed electricity company dedicated to building urgently needed new green capacity to replace conventional polluting sources of electricity. Creating this new capacity is the most important factor to reduce the emissions that are causing climate change. We all use electricity, but now we can be part of the solution and not part of the problem. By switching to Ecotricity each individual can make his or her contribution to the reduction of the emissions that threaten our future, without any cost. And there's no limit to the number of customers that Ecotricity can convert, as managing director, Dale Vince explains,
"This new initiative is about giving people the opportunity to vote with their feet against polluting fossil fuels in favour of clean renewable energy. It is the dawn of a new era in terms of engaging with people in the fight against climate change for the good of the environment.
"We already have public backing for our wind projects such as the one at Swaffham and we're building new projects across the country to provide communities with a safe abundant local power source."
Wind power is the safest, cleanest and most economic form of electricity around although there are still many myths connected with building wind turbines. Modern wind turbines are extremely quiet and are designed to blend in with the surrounding landscape. A MORI poll carried out last year revealed that nine out of ten tourists visiting some of Scotland's top beauty spots said that the presence of wind farms made no difference to the enjoyment of their holiday and twice as many people would return to an area because of the presence of a wind farm than would stay away.
