It’s not been possible before, but we think the time is right to make electricity by harnessing the sun, on a large scale – in the UK . (yes really... :) )
What we have in mind are quite simply fields of solar panels that make electricity from the sun, which we’ll put into the local grid - just as we do with our Windmills.
In fact it’s all so similar that what we’re going to call these solar panels ‘Sunmills’ and the fields of them ‘Sun Parks’.
Sunmills will become a major source of energy for Ecotricity in the next few years.
We’ve submitted a planning application for our first Sun Park – in Lincolnshire at the site of our existing Wind Park (known as Fen Farm).
This will be one of the first combined Wind and Sun energy parks in the world. If everything goes to plan (and it sometimes does) it could be up and running by the end of this year.
And this is just the start. We have several more in the pipeline.
Using the latest technology will enable us to harness the power of the sun, to power the homes and businesses of our customers - even on overcast and dull days.
The energy payback (the amount of time it takes to repay the energy used in creating and installing the solar panels – or Sunmills) is in the region of two years and they’ll produce clean electricity for up to 25 years – that’s a big net gain of clean energy.
Just as we turn electricity bills into Windmills we're now going to turn electricity bills into Sunmills as well.
This is a very exciting new direction for us and for the UK.
