Our smart grid scheme

You’ll charge your battery from the grid and/or a source such as solar panels during a period of low demand. When demand increases so does the price of energy. The energy stored in your battery will be exported to our smart grid scheme when demand is peaking and we’ll pay you for it. The smart grid links together thousands of home and business battery storage systems and generators, as well as their National Grid equivalents. These are all connected wirelessly to a single digital platform, enabling them to work together to create a more sustainable and secure energy grid with balanced supply and demand. Using the smart grid, we can identify where we can make small adjustments that have a big impact. It may be something that seems insignificant, like dimming the lights for just sixty seconds in business premises when there’s a high demand on the grid. But when you’ve got thousands of businesses plugged in, it can make a huge difference and ensure that we make the most of every bit of green energy.

As renewable energy generation increases, Britain’s energy grid needs to become more flexible. The problem is having the right amount of energy available at the right time, as you can’t expect the weather to be completely consistent.
