Our smart grid scheme

A smart grid uses new technology to monitor energy demand and output, and intelligently balances them to avoid peaks and troughs thus improving efficiency. If you have a home storage battery, you could benefit from Ecotricity’s Smart Grid scheme.

What are the benefits of the smart grid?

As renewable energy generation increases, Britain’s energy grid needs to become more flexible. The problem is having the right amount of energy available at the right time, as you can’t expect the weather to be completely consistent. Battery storage of energy is just one part of the answer – the broader solution is the smart grid. Innovation like the smart grid is another big step towards creating a sustainable world – one where renewable energy delivers our power needs, come rain or shine.

How does the Ecotricity Smart Grid work?

Our Smart Grid links many types of renewable generation assets and demand wirelessly to a single digital platform, where we can monitor them in real time and use them to deliver flexibility services to the National Grid, for which you will get paid. These services are only delivered at times which suits you and your business requirements. All of which helps to create a more sustainable and secure energy grid by balanced supply and demand in the very short term.

Using our smart grid platform, we can identify where we can make small adjustments that have a big impact. It may be something that seems insignificant, like dimming the lights for sixty seconds in business premises when there’s a high demand on the grid. Having hundreds of businesses plugged in like this creates a ‘virtual power plant’ – and it can make a huge difference, ensuring we make the most of every bit of green energy.

The Ecotricity Smart Grid both makes you money and ensure that more renewable energy is being used across the whole grid, helping to fight the climate crisis. It’s the future of energy in Britain.

Our smart grid scheme is coming soon. To find out more, email smartgrids@ecotricity.co.uk

Energy supplies are monitored by the smart grid control centre, as is energy consumption, so that the two can be balanced for a more efficient energy grid.

Climate Clock

The Climate Clock is a version of the Doomsday clock that has been running since 1947 - this tracks the risk of global man-made disaster, through man made technology (like nuclear weapons) - displaying the minutes and seconds left before midnight, when disaster strikes. The climate crisis is a small part of the calculations made.
The climate clock uses a similar approach, but, focuses only on the climate crisis - which is the biggest and most urgent existential threat we face.
"The Climate Clock is a countdown to the biggest man-made disaster we face - but also a measure by which we can track our progress - moving from fossil to renewable energy. It shows we have no time to lose - the clock is ticking…" Dale Vince, OBE.
Ecotricity is a sponsor of the Glasgow Climate Clock that will run every night until COP26.
