Shilton Downs, Oxfordshire

Our solar site that’s set to shine.

Even under the often overcast skies of Britain, solar photovoltaic panels are able to go about their job generating green energy, all whilst being completely silent and almost 100% recyclable at the end of their working life (see how they work).

With a capacity of 10MW, our proposed sun park at Shilton Downs will be our biggest yet, powering the equivalent of just over 2,300 homes. If replacing electricity generated from fossil fuels, as anticipated, over 6,000 tonnes of CO2 would be saved from entering the atmosphere each year. Not only will the sun park enhance biodiversity through the creation of grassland and the planting of species-rich hedgerows, but it will also integrate with traditional agricultural practices, with sheep continuing to graze freely between the solar panels.

Located on the outskirts of Shilton, the site is flat and well-screened by existing trees and hedgerows, meaning the sun park will not be very visible – if at all – from the surrounding area and can make an important contribution to Oxfordshire renewable energy credentials and Britain’s energy independence.

Planning Updates

Appeal rejected - 16 August 2017

We’re disappointed to report that the Planning Inspector has dismissed our appeal for a revised Shilton Downs application for nearly 10MW of solar power in the Oxfordshire countryside.

The site could have powered over 2,300 homes and saved over 6,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. We think that’s a missed opportunity for more green energy in Britain.

And we still think it’s a great location for solar power. Despite the fact that the Inspector agreed with a lot of our landscape assessment, he stated that the panels would detract from the unspoilt open farmland locally. For us, the project was well screened and there was no question of anything being spoiled – after all, green energy is here to safeguard the future of our environment.

Planning Application Submitted and Validated - 25 November 2015

Following August’s Drop in Session at Shilton Village Hall, we have now submitted a revised planning application, along with an Environmental Report, to West Oxfordshire District Council for consideration.

The application has a number of revisions from the original, including a reduced solar panel area, making the scheme less visible, and the relocation of the proposed temporary construction compound and proposed substation further away from the village of Shilton.

Full details are of the proposal are available here:

  • Environmental Report: Volume 1
  • Design and Access Statement
  • Flood Risk Assessment
  • Planning Statement

Drop in Session - 01 September 2015

In August we held a Drop in Session at Shilton Village Hall to share our revised proposals.

Around 30 people visited to hear more about the revised proposal, ask questions and share their views.

In advance of the event, we sent out around 110 invitations to local residents and businesses. The event was very useful and we’re extremely appreciative of the constructive community feedback we received both at the event and in its aftermath.

Of the issues discussed, people were most interested in the transport arrangements during the construction phase – and we were able to give an insight into what we’ve got planned.

We captured lots of feedback and the majority of people who attended said they left better informed about the proposal and the planning process.

We would like to thank all residents for their feedback and we’ll be writing to residents again to update them on any further changes to the proposal and address frequently asked questions.

If you have any questions about the proposal, please send us an email at shiltondowns@ecotricity.co.uk  and one of our Development Team will get back you.
