Transport is one of the leading causes of carbon emissions in the UK, but using your bike in place of your car is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. Sustran's Big Pedal Week starts on 25 March and to celebrate, we're looking at what makes cycling so great.

    Zero carbon emissions

Carbon emissions drift up into the Earth's atmosphere and cause climate change. But unlike travelling by car, you don't produce any nasty carbon emissions when you cycle, so you can travel around knowing that you're not harming the planet.

    Keep fit

Hopping on your bike is a great way to get your heart rate up. Cycling to and from work is a great alternative to driving, and it's much quicker than walking - particularly if you don't live very close to work.

It’s a great feeling to know that before you've even arrived at work, you've had a good workout! Plus, it means you can crack open the biscuit box for some guilt free treats throughout the day.

    Wake up

Feeling the chilly morning air hit you as you cycle will give you a bigger wake up call than coffee – minus the shakes!

    Nature spotting

If you're lucky enough to live in the countryside, you'll have plenty of different routes to cycle to work, so your journey won't ever get boring. And even if your cycle route takes you through towns and cities, you'll still be sure to find some British wildlife to accompany you on your trip.

    Avoid traffic

While everyone else is stuck in traffic because of the roadworks outside town, you'll be able to avoid it by sticking to the cycle path or cutting through parks.

    Save money

Catching the bus every day is expensive. Running a car is even more so - especially when you add up insurance, petrol, and road tax.

Once you've covered the cost of your bike, your journeys don't cost you a penny. And you can save even more money by buying a second hand bike. The maths is pretty simple!
