P272: Changing to half hourly meter reading
What is P272?
P272 is the not very snappy title that refers to a simple but really positive industry wide change – upgrading certain business electricity customers to half hourly metering systems.
Moving to half hourly metering will basically mean more accurate billing and more information on energy usage for businesses.
Who do the changes affect?
The changes will essentially affect medium sized business customers.
Business customers are put into certain categories based on how much energy they use. These categories are called load profiles and they reflect the pattern of energy the business uses over a day and throughout the year.
P272 will affect customers in load profile classes 05 to 08 – which, in simple terms, means businesses that generally have medium energy usage.
What is half hourly metering?
It’s pretty self-explanatory really: half hourly meters take automated meter readings at half hourly intervals. This enables us as your supplier to understand your energy usage better.
We expect it will also better reflect the actual energy costs of your business – so you’re billed for your energy usage more precisely.
What are the benefits of half hourly metering?
Half hourly metering provides much more accurate data on your energy usage. This means you can breakdown how you use energy, become more energy efficient and possibly help to reduce your usage and costs.
Will P272 affect my costs and bills?
It may do, yes. We’ll be able to work out your energy costs based on more accurate info on what you actually use – that will mean a fairer cost for your energy. Depending on the pattern of your energy usage, you could see a fall in costs, but you could also see a rise. It depends on when you actually use your energy – for instance, if you use less energy at expensive times, such as the winter peak, you could save money.

How is the information collected?
The information is collected through a half hourly meter. Most customers will already have a meter that has half hourly metering capability – so it’s likely that for most customers all we’ll need to do is activate that functionality remotely.
If you’re one of the small number of customers who don't have a meter with half hourly read capability, an official Meter Operator (MOP) will install, update and maintain one for you.
The meter operator will check how each meter communicates with us, your energy supplier. They then give your meter details to a Data Collector (DC).
The data collector will verify that information and then send it to us as your supplier so that we can invoice you for the actual data consumed rather than relying on estimated reads.
You don’t need to do anything yet. We’ll get in touch with you as soon as we’re ready to turn you on to half hourly reads.
