Ecotricity History - 2004

The Ford plant at Dagenham at nighttime

The year kicked off with our Founder, Dale, being awarded an OBE for services to the environment in the New Year Honours list. It was an amazing (and most unexpected) honour, and a great start to the New Year...

We built the most windmills yet. Eight new turbines right next to our existing two in Lincolnshire – generating enough electricity to power 4,000 homes! And our second Merchant Wind Power project – two big windmills to power Ford in Dagenham.

This was quite a special project – not only Britain’s first industrial use of windmills but these two powered Ford’s new diesel engine factory – so from this year all Ford diesels in the world were made in a factory powered (100%) by the wind. A serious endorsement of wind power and of our pioneering Merchant Wind concept.

To top it all, by the end of the year we powered nearly 8,000 homes. Blimey.

Total windmills installed: 7
MW installed (this year): 8
Total capacity to date: 7
Homes powered (equiv): 3,680
Tonnes of CO2 saved p.a.: 5,966
Homes supplied year end: 7,935
