Coca-Cola Enterprises opts for on-site wind energy
Since we began looking at this project we’ve been in ongoing talks with a number of local bodies. One being the West Yorkshire Police Service (WYASU). They have their helicopter base near the site and we needed to understand if this proposal would impact on the service they offer to the region. Normally such services would not be affected by the presence of a single turbine, however WYASU operations are already constrained due to existing electricity pylons near the helicopter base.
We adhere rigorously to our own Good Neighbour policy which means that if we cannot be certain a turbine will not adversely impact it’s neighbours, we won’t proceed. Discussions with WYASU have shown that a wind turbine on the CCE site would impact on the Police Helicopter service. Such an impact is not acceptable to us or CCE and we are therefore not progressing any further with this proposed development.

Since we initially announced that we were investigating the possibility of installing a wind turbine at the Coca Cola Site we have been in discussions with many local consultees. One of these is West Yorkshire Police Air Support Unit which is based at Carr Gate.
These discussions have determined that the helicopter base and its operations are already constrained by the electricity pylons that surround the site. The turbine could make their operations even more constrained. Such a constraint could lead to an impact on the service that they can offer to the Region.
An issue of this kind is unusual as helicopters can operate in very close proximity to wind turbines. It was not the presence of the wind turbine that has caused the issue; it was fact that the operations of the Police are already constrained by the close electricity pylons that made the impact of the combination of the turbine and the electricity pylons too great.
Our policy clearly states that we only develop a project if we can be sure that it can be a “Good Neighbour” for its lifetime. Any impact on operational service to the Police would have broken this commitment and we have therefore chosen to not progress with this site.

The country's biggest soft drinks factory could soon be running on wind power.
We’re working with Coca-Cola Enterprises Ltd (CCE) to submit a planning application for a 2MW wind turbine at CCE’s Wakefield manufacturing and distribution site.
Once the full application is submitted it will be available to view at:
