Wind Pioneer

At Ecotricity we build, own and operate all our wind turbines. We manage the whole process from planning to construction, and ultimately the delivery of green electricity to our customers via the local or national grid systems.

Ecotricity is responsible for some major firsts in wind developments :

We built the UK's first multi megawatt wind turbine in 1999, at the Ecotech Centre in Swaffham, Norfolk. It has a unique public viewing platform which has been visited by over 60,000 people.   image - Swaffham l, Ecotech Centre

Both Swaffham turbines combined provide enough power for around 75% of the town's domestic electricity needs.

Last year we brought London its first wind park. Sited at Ford Motors' Dagenham plant, the two 1.8MW wind turbines provide 100% of the electricity used in the manufacture of all Ford's diesel engines assembled at the plant.

Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone said, "This scheme will make an important contribution towards making London a more sustainable world city and will help us to achieve some of the key targets in my Energy Strategy."

In October 2004 we built eight new wind turbines at Mablethorpe. The electricity from six of the wind turbines is allocated specifically to Co-operative Bank and CIS Ltd (CFS) to supply their offices throughout the UK, in a ground breaking power purchase agreement with us. This 'off-site' Merchant Wind Power deal guarantees that CFS will save around £250,000 over the lifetime of the contract.
