UK Targets

Targets adopted by the UK Government to address climate change:

1997 Kyoto Protocol - 5.2% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions below 1990 levels. This legally binding agreement came into force in February 2005.

2001 EU Parliament - Renewable Energy Directive adopts a target for the whole of the European Union to generate 12% of electricity from renewable sources by 2010.

Domestic targets - to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% below 1990 levels and to increase electricity generation from renewables to 10% by 2010.

2003 Energy White Paper – to reduce CO2 emissions by 2050 to 60% of current levels.
