Scotland is one of the windiest places in Europe, so a wind park in the right place here could be made to work really hard and produce lots of green energy for us all.

We think our proposed Straid Farm wind park is a perfect spot - just east of the costal A77 road, around 1km north east of Lendalfoot and next to a busy landfill site. It could power the equivalent of over half the homes in South Ayrshire – that’s a lot of clear, green power.
As well as being windy, this site also meets all of the other strict criteria we set ourselves for a good location. We’ve designed the layout carefully to take a whole range of factors into account, including the landfill site next door, on-site ecology and ornithology, radar, site access and the local grid connection, together with any potential impact on the wider landscape.
Every unit of green energy made here is one less that has to be made from other sources, such as burning imported coal or gas. The wind is ours and it’s everlasting, so let’s make the most of it.

Our planning application was submitted to South Ayrshire Council on the 30 January 2012. The planning department will now carry out a period of consultation with statutory undertakers and the public before making a recommendation on the acceptability of the proposal to their elected members.
After hearing the views of local people at our two days of recent exhibitions, we have reduced the number of windmills proposed at Straid Farm.
The two windmills nearest the coast will be removed to reflect local people’s concerns about their potential visual impact when driving north along the A77. The overall site layout has also been refined to move the remaining windmills back slightly, to further reduce any visual impact when seen directly against Pinbain Hill.
The revised wind park layout of 14 windmills will produce enough green energy to power 23,693 typical homes, and save 33,621 tonnes of polluting CO2 ever year.
The plans we presented at our open days in Lendalfoot and Colmonell on 30 and 31 August were the result of more than two years’ study, design and environmental research. We had already rejected a number of potential locations for windmills within the site when devising its original plans, because they did not meet our strict criteria.
For a site of its potential capacity, the Straid Farm site is well screened from view. The site will not be seen from virtually all of Girvan and beyond to the north, and with restricted views from the south beyond the nearby Varyag war memorial car park. It would be around 1km from Lendalfoot and would not be seen from anywhere in Colmonell.
