Harringe Brooks Wind Park Update

Ecotricity are now coming to the end of the assessment process for the proposed Wind Park at Harringe Brooks and are preparing the final submission of the application to Shepway District Council.

As part of this year long process, the number and size of the proposed wind turbines at this site has altered slightly. The conclusion of the studies undertaken were that the proposal for 6 x 125m tip height wind turbines provides the most efficient design for the site.

This design will generate around 49.13 million units (kWh) of electricity every year which based upon the average household consumption of 4,152kWh/household provides for the equivalent of 11,800 homes per annum. This is a sizeable contribution to the renewable needs of the Shepway District

Planning Updates

Planning application submitted - 21 May 2012

Following more than a year of on-site studies and environmental research, added to a public exhibition updating residents of our plans, we have now submitted our application for a Harringe Brooks Wind Park to Shepway District Council.

The Council will now check they have all the details they require for the application and then formally consult local residents and statutory bodies on the proposal. Once they have all the formal comments back, they will then make a decision. The target date for a decision is usually within 16 weeks of a validated application being received. Copies of the application will be viewable online at Shepway District Councils Website reference number Y12/0451/SH. A copy of the non technical summary is also available above.

Proposed Harringe Brooks Wind Park Public Exhibition - 16 April 2012

Following the completion of a series of detailed environmental studies on the proposed site at Harringe Brooks, Ecotricity is now preparing to submit an application which would generate green power for around 11,800 homes.

Please find our newsletter here which describes our proposal and provides information on the most commonly asked questions.

We would like to take the opportunity to discuss the latest details with people living locally before we submit the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to Shepway District Council. As a result we will be holding an open day on:

  • Monday 16th April 2012, Sellindge Village HallSellindge Village Hall, Main Rd, Sellindge TN25 6JY from 2.00pm to 8.00pm

Although we were hoping to hold a second day in Lympne we were not able to book the village hall given its high demand. If any residents in Lympne are not able to attend on the day due to travel constraints then please let us know and I will endeavour to assist with some travel arrangements.

Members of the Ecotricity team will be on-hand to discuss the findings of the EIA with you on the day, as well as help answer any queries you may have.

Otherwise if you have any questions at any other time then please do not hesitate to contact us at:

Temporary masts application and scoping request submitted - 18 April 2011

Ecotricity has applied to install a pair of temporary wind masts at the Harringe Books site. These are tall slender temporary metal poles, secured by guy wires, with small sensors at the tip to measure wind speed & direction at height to see if the site is suitable for wind energy.

If approved, the masts would be 80 metres in height and 25.4cm wide at the thickest point. They can be simply and easily installed by a small team in a couple of days, and once removed leave no trace. Temporary masts are one of a number of thorough stages we go through to assess if the site is a good one for producing wind energy. Because of the unusual layout of the site and wind characteristics, Ecotricity has also submitted a formal scoping request for the proposed wind park at Harringe Brooks.

The submission of our scoping opinion invites official comments on our proposal from statutory consultees such as Natural England and the RSPB. We do this so that we are able to get initial feedback from them at an early stage. All the information gathered goes into the final report submitted to the council, upon which they make their decision, and the whole document will also be available to view publicly.

Initial planning stage - 23 February 2011

We are in the initial stages of investigating the feasibility of a wind park at Harringe Brooks near Sellindge, Kent.

At this early stage, we completed site assessments including an initial site layout design. This layout will be confirmed as the site is developed and as further information arises.

In order to receive comments from all local and national statutory bodies, a scoping opinion will be submitted to Shepway district council explaining our proposals and including all the current relevant information we have. This then gets forwarded, via an official process, to all relevant bodies for their expert comment.

While the planning process can be a long one, often with many months between stages, we will aim to keep you informed with the latest news here.
