Ecotricity, the world’s first green electricity company, has confirmed that its new Microtricity initiative, based around the government’s ‘Feed in Tariff’ scheme, is to offer existing home generators the highest rate in the UK.
Microtricity has been created to help people generate their own energy at home, primarily using solar PV panels or mini windmills. Under the scheme, new home generators1 will receive a fixed payment for every unit of green electricity they generate2, they can use the power themselves and still get paid as well - and receive another payment for each unit they export to the grid.
But Ecotricity also believes that green energy pioneers who installed micro generation much earlier should be getting more support than the government is offering, and so will be offering a rate of 16p per unit to early adopters3 - the UK’s most generous and well over the standard rate of 10.5p4.
Dale Vince, founder and MD of Ecotricity, said:
“There’s never been a better time for you to install your own source of green energy, or a better scheme than Microtricity to help you do it.
“But the real pioneers of homemade green energy have been left a bit out in the cold by the new rules, to be honest – so we’re offering the best rate we can to try and close the gap and more properly support them for their commitment to move Britain from old brown to new green energy.”
