WWF's Stop Climate Chaos! Campaign Director, Matthew Davis, said:
"Consumers have a vital role to play in encouraging the increase of electricity generated from renewable resources. The only credible model for customers investing in new wind projects via their bill payments comes from Ecotricity, which is continually building new wind turbines."
Rather than recycling old green power from sources that have been around for decades, such as hydroelectric generation, Ecotricity works to increase the UK's sustainable energy resource by devoting all its profits to building new green energy. Last year the firm spent £7m installing super-efficient, low noise wind turbines, which save the equivalent of 17,154 tonnes of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere.
Dale Vince, who founded Ecotricity in 1996 and was awarded an OBE last year for his services to the energy industry, welcomed the WWF deal:
"This will really help people and businesses in the UK understand the realities of fighting global warming. Over the years, well intentioned people have been mislead into believing that signing up for 100% 'green' power deals meant they were doing their bit - but this wasn't the case. To cut pollution we have to build additional green energy supply, which is why we created the New Energy Tariff."
WWF-UK's Stop Climate Chaos! campaign is calling on the Government and the power sector to drastically reduce CO2 emissions - a major cause of global warming - to help ensure the average rise in global temperature stays well below 2°C. This is a crucial tipping point for the environment and one that would have devastating impacts for people and wildlife.
Matthew Davis added: "The power sector is the biggest single contributor to climate change in this country. WWF wants to prevent climate chaos by helping to bring about a CO2-free power sector in industrialised countries by 2050."
