Ecotricity, the UK's leading green electricity supplier, today announced it has met the Government's target for supplying electricity from renewable sources and is the only company to achieve this though its own building programme. By the end of the year 2002-3 the company held more than the required amount of Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCS) to satisfy the target criteria. The company's announcement comes on the back of its recent spectacular success building the UK's largest onshore wind turbine.
The Renewable Obligation targets were set as part of the Government's drive to diversify the electricity supply industry and address the UK's fossil fuel reliance. The first year is set at 3% and increases incrementally year on year up to 10% by 2010.
Dale Vince, Ecotricity's Managing Director said, "We plan to build 100MW of capacity over the next three years and are confident that by 2010 we will easily exceed the Government's target. This achievement is proof of our commitment to building new green electricity sources. It doesn't stop here, we are going to exceed our targets by more each year. No other company has this intention. We are the only company to meet the target by building our own sources, those that don't reach the standard will just buy certificates."
