Dear Friends,

I thought you might like to know what we've been up to recently, it's been a while after all, and we never sit still here…
  Dale Vince, CEO
   A Change In Power
With Gordon taking over from Tony at No 10, we thought it was a good time to call for another change of power - a change from Carbon to Renewable. So to mark the big day we came up with the idea of the Green Union Jack, and plastered it across the entire back page of the Guardian with a short message reading: “Dear Gordon we’re all for a change of power, enjoy your big day”.

"The new green Union Jack symbolises the need for change at a national level: a change in attitude and a positive new green energy ambition", says Dale. “Britain can come together if we focus on our common cause, it’s called Climate Change”. Let's all hope for a bit of Mr Green from Mr Brown.

   Bristol Port turns green

Bristol Port turbines being unloaded from ship

First turbine being unloaded at Bristol Docks. Each blade is 38.8 metres long.

As we write this, three new turbines have just arrived by boat (a very low carbon means of delivery) and are beginning to be assembled at Bristol Port. The project is a great example of how wind energy can power industrial sites. There are some great advantages to using these so called ‘brownfield’ sites, not least of which is we make the power right where it’s needed. One downside though is that often the ground is 'made up' as in this case where we found ourselves facing a mixture of very (very) soft ground with large chunks of concrete in it – decades old remnants from building the M5 in fact. It was a good challenge for our engineering team though.

Thanks Al Gore

It's great to be recognised for the things we do. Two weeks ago it was for the innovative ways we fight climate change, and Al Gore was in town to present ecotricity with the coveted Ashden Award. The award was for our Merchant Wind Power scheme which has been engaging big business in the job of tackling climate change through onsite wind projects, like the one at Bristol Port above actually....

It was a great pleasure to meet the man himself too.
