Approval given for more turbines at Mablethorpe

Photomontage of how the project will look (including the existing 2 wind turbines)Ecotricity is celebrating the news that it can build eight more wind turbines at Mablethorpe in Lincolnshire after receiving approval from the Planning Inspectorate at appeal level. Despite the advice of its own planning officers, East Lindsey District Council rejected Ecotricity's original planning application in July 2003.

The new wind turbines, with a combined capacity of 4.8MW, will be built at Bambers Farm this summer and will produce over 13 million units of electricity each year - enough to power over 4,000 local homes. Mablethorpe already has two wind turbines, built by Ecotricity in 2002, at the sewage treatment plant in Mile Lane. When the eight new wind turbines are operational, Mablethorpe will provide enough wind-generated electricity to power 10% of homes in the district and stop the emissions of over 11,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.

This is Ecotricity's biggest project yet and is half of the total build capacity planned by the company for this year.

Work is also now underway to build London's first wind park at Ford Motor Company's Dagenham site. Ecotricity will erect two 1.8MW turbines in April and a third turbine, housing a 65m high visitor platform, will be built later this year. Once the project is complete, all of the diesel engines produced at Dagenham will be manufactured using wind power.
