Ecotricity brings wind to Notting Hill

4 June 2004

Wind power on sale at London Farmers' Markets

Ecotricity will be setting up a stall this Saturday at one of London's largest farmers' markets in Notting Hill, London. This will mark the first time shoppers at a Farmers' Market will be offered the chance to purchase a non-food product, along with the usual organic fruit, vegetables, meat and home-baked foods.

This is particularly timely as the 5th-19th of June is London Sustainability Week, which celebrates the action of local people working to make London a more sustainable city and a greener and a healthier place to live.

Ecotricity has been granted a stand because it falls in line with the Farmers' Markets ethic of 'sustainability'. Shoppers will be given the chance to learn more about the wind-powered electricity on offer to consumers, the benefits of using a renewable energy source and the practicalities of switching their home supply. As well as offering information on the green alternative, Ecotricity will be giving away free Soil Association membership to anyone who signs up on the spot.

The aim of the London Farmers' Markets is to increase farm incomes, and promote local and seasonal foods. It encourages sustainable agriculture, traditional animal breeds and heritage fruit and vegetable varieties and reduces the gap between rural and urban communities. The organisation provides advice to farmers about what to grow, how to grow it, and how to market local produce.

Dale Vince OBE, Managing Director of Ecotricity, said: "Farmers' Markets tend to attract the more 'green-minded' kind of person since they are known for selling organic produce - we therefore believe that this is a great place for us to be. These are typically the kind of people who are concerned about the environment. It is an opportunity for us to reach people on the street and let them know the facts. We will also be taking our stall to other London Farmers' Markets this month.
