Ecotricity to build second Swaffham Wind Turbine

1st October 2002

Today Ecotricity has been given the go-ahead to build a second wind turbine in Swaffham, after receiving planning approval from Breckland District Council. Once built, the turbine will be the biggest in the UK standing 85m high, and will boost Norfolk's wind power by 30%.

Managing Director, Dale Vince, is delighted at the result, "I'm chuffed. We're going to build the turbine that the people of Swaffham asked for and for the first time ever people in Norfolk can buy the power from our wind turbines to power their homes."

'Swaffham ll' will be built at Sporle Road in early 2003 and, combined with the existing Swaffham turbine built by Ecotricity in 1999, 75% of the towns' people will be powered by clean electricity - around 2,300 homes. The environmental savings are substantial, and the new wind turbine will displace the emission of nearly 4,000 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) every year.

The launch of Ecotricity's national home supply electricity tariff means that people across East Anglia can now sign up to buy electricity directly from this wind park and other Ecotricity wind developments. This gives people the opportunity to help improve the environment, at the same price as conventional electricity from their local supplier.
