Building starts on 1st Renewables Obligation project

17th June 2002

The first wind energy project to contribute to the UK Government's Renewables Obligation is being built this week by the founder of the green electricity market place, Ecotricity.

An innovative wind energy developer, Ecotricity is quick to respond to the UK's 10% target for renewable energy, as it builds Lincolnshire's first wind park. The two 600kW 65m high wind turbines, being installed at a water treatment site in Mablethorpe, will provide electricity for over 1,100 homes, nearly half of all households in the town.

Under the Government's Renewables Obligation, electricity companies must supply 10% of their electricity from renewable energy by 2010. Ecotricity has set its own target to supply 50% of its electricity from sources such as wind power in the same time. Dale Vince, Managing Director of Ecotricity, would like to see other suppliers aspiring to achieve far more than the minimum legal requirement.

"Our building programme is customer led. We've made a pledge to build and supply new wind energy for all our customers and Mablethorpe is the first of many new Ecotricity projects to fulfil this promise." - Dale Vince

The Mablethorpe wind park will prevent the annual emission of around 3,215 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide (CO2), 37 tonnes of Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) and 11 tonnes of Nitrogen Oxides (NOX), plus several tonnes of ash and slag.
