Leading organic food company powered by 'organic' electricity

10th April 2002
Suma, the leading organic food company that introduced lentils to Leeds, has switched to 'organic' electricity from Ecotricity, the world's first green electricity company. Ecotricity is generated from sources such as wind, solar and hydro that don't pollute and won't run out.

Suma has grown from humble origins since selling rice from a living room in 1970. It is now a multi-million pound business and one of the UK's leading organic wholesalers. Suma is a workers' co-operative on a mission to promote a healthier lifestyle. Fair trade is a high priority for Suma and many of its range of over 7000 products and foods are ethically sourced. Products range from recycled toilet paper called Ecoleaf, to Honey from Yorkshire.

Suma's Buildings Manager, Fenella Lewin says,.

"We are looking for ways to reduce our CO2 emissions or become carbon neutral and powering our warehouse with Ecotricity is a fantastic way of helping to reduce our impact on the environment."

By choosing Ecotricity, Suma is helping to bring about significant environmental improvement. Conventional electricity is the biggest contributor to climate change. Ecotricity is the only electricity company committed to building new, cleaner sources of electricity such as wind power to supply its customers.
