It's Up!
Ecotricity completes UK's Tallest Wind Turbine

14 July 2003

The operation to complete the UK's tallest wind turbine has ended in a spectacular success with the turbine's hub and blades being lifted, as one, 85m (278ft) to connect with the structure's tower. The delicate manoeuvre took place at the weekend and involved the use of one giant and two smaller cranes at Ecotricity's site near Swaffham, Norfolk.

Dale Vince, Ecotricity's Managing Director says, "It's magnificent and a real thrill to think that this turbine will be producing clean electricity in a few days. This is the latest step in our mission to change the way electricity is produced in the UK. We want people to join us by buying power from Ecotricity. That will mean that the money from their bills will go straight back into creating more clean energy production."

When the turbine starts to generate electricity it will provide enough power for over 1200 homes. This is the second turbine to be sited at Swaffham and was built by popular demand of local people. Combined with the first turbine, erected in 1999 it will supply 75% of Swaffham's total home electricity requirements, boosting Norfolk's total wind power by 30%.
