Ecotricity and CARE International home in on sustainable development

13 May 2003

Leading overseas aid agency CARE International UK is supporting Ecotricity, the UK's largest independent supplier of renewable energy, in its drive to encourage homeowners throughout England and Wales to install clean electricity.

Ecotricity is offering homeowners the opportunity to switch to green electricity taken from renewable energy sources, at no extra cost to themselves. Green energy sources, such as wind, sun and water, do not pollute and do not run out. Ecotricity is the only licensed electricity company in the UK dedicated to building new green energy capacity. As an independent company, all its profits are ploughed back into growing the business. It has a goal to supply one million homes and is building new projects across the UK to meet demand.

CARE donors already support sustainable environmental and agricultural projects in developing countries. Now, there is an opportunity to support CARE by promoting sustainable development in the UK. CARE will receive £5 from Ecotricity for every person who switches to its green electricity via the link on CARE's website (www.careinternational.org.uk).

Dale Vince, managing director of Ecotricity comments, "Wind energy is the natural and most economic solution to providing clean electricity. It is the environmental and practical alternative to conventional electricity for the developed and developing world. This is an important partnership in terms of spreading the word about the value of using local and abundant wind sources to combat climate change for the good of the whole planet."

Working in partnership with ethical companies is crucial to both CARE and Ecotricity. Will Day, chief executive of CARE explains: "It is the world's poorest people who suffer most from the impact of climate change and bad environmental practice. This new partnership between CARE and Ecotricity gives people the opportunity - at no cost to themselves - to make changes at home that benefit the global environment and support us in our efforts to achieve a more sustainable world.'
