Ecotricity Appeals Against Planning Refusal

22 July 2003

Green electricity supplier, Ecotricity, is hoping that the Government will continue to demonstrate its backing for renewable energy by upholding its appeal against East Lindsey District Council's refusal of planning permission for eight new wind turbines at Bambers Farm, Mablethorpe.

The company appeal to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, against the Northern Planning Committee's ruling, will now be considered by the Planning Inspectorate on the DPM's behalf.

The application was turned down against the advice of the authority's own planning officers. The company's appeal contends that the Planning Committee did not give sufficient weight to the wider environmental benefits of renewable energy and did not take account of the Government's own planning guidance on such developments.

The proposed extension of the Lincolnshire Wind Park would provide enough electricity for 5000 local homes and save 11,392 tonnes of carbon dioxide being emitted into the atmosphere per year.

Mablethorpe already has two wind turbines, sited at the sewage treatment plant in Mile Lane. They are providing enough power for over 1,100 local homes and contributing 2.5% of Lincolnshire's target of 10% of power from renewable energy sources by 2010.

Ecotricity recently completed the UK's tallest wind turbine at Swaffham in Norfolk which was built at the request of local people after the success of a similar turbine in the town.
