UK's first Football club to light up with 'Green' Power

2nd March 2001
This week, a UK Football Club will become the first ever in the country, if not the world, to be powered by 'green' electricity. In a bid to make a positive contribution to the environment Shortwood United AFC, based in Gloucestershire is significantly reducing its Carbon Dioxide emissions by changing its supply over to Europe's first and foremost 'green' electricity company, Ecotricity, also based in Gloucestershire.

Shortwood, which is currently in the Hellenic League is pinning its hopes on promotion to the Dr Martins league this season,

"We have an excellent view of Ecotricity's wind turbine from our pitch and we're counting on our new environmentally friendly electricity to power our chances of promotion."
Says Chairman of Shortwood, Pete Webb

Ecotricity are also in their second year of sponsorship, to help the club to modernise their facilities,

"Shortwood are a great team and they care about the environment. I enjoy watching them play and I'm sure this will mark the beginning of a trend for other clubs to come to us for their electricity."
Says Dale Vince, Managing Director of Ecotricity.

Ecotricity is generated from sources, which are more sustainable and less polluting than conventional fuel sources, such as wind, hydro, sewage and landfill gas. The company is committed to the environmental mission of combating climate change, by stimulating a mass market for Ecotricity, achieved by offering it at the same price as conventional electricity. Customers include household names like The Body Shop, WWF, B&Q, EMI and The Co-operative Bank.
